Shock N’ Awe 20 set to be biggest show yet

Over the past 5 years the South Coast’s premier Mixed Martial Arts event has hosted 19 shows, the stars of which have which have either been, or gone on to be some of the top names in Europe. The landmark 20th show is set for May 30th and Promoter Gareth Johnson and Matchmaker Brian Adams have clearly pulled out all the stops for this one.

Shock N’ Awe have had many fighters go on to fight nationally and internationally, particularly some of GYM01’s stand outs. Now, with Cage Warriors on an indefinite hiatus Shock N’ awe have the opportunity to showcase some of these talents once again.

The main event features newly crowned Light Heavyweight champion Roman Ship (Oxford shoot) taking on Carl Kinslow (Medway Submissions). Ship was a relative unknown compared to Kinslow until he took the belt with a victory of UK veteran Ryan white. There will be fireworks when these to juggernauts throw down in May.

The co-main event pits the ever popular James ‘Power Weasel’ Pennington against AVT’s James Saville for the featherweight title. Pennington is a multi weight champion on SnA and there have always been calls for him to fight at 145lb. His last win came against a late stand in and after some tough times personally for the GYM01 fighter, this match up against a more challenging opponent will be a welcome return to the Mountbatten Centre.

Two CWFC veteran’s go to war in the bantamweight division is a fight that could steal the show. James ‘Job Done’ Brum was perhaps CWFC hardest serving employee who fought internationally and only came up short once in  his eight outings. Martin Sheridan is the proud owner of one of the nastiest knock outs you will see and he will look to balance his record after a two fight skid.

High level Judoka Brett ‘the ninja’ Caswell is also back, a man who can’t be too far from a call to the big show. The 6-1 GYM01 flyweight will take on Artimej Sitenkov from Lithuania. Sitenkov is a submission wizard with over both Niel Seery and Conor McGregor to his credit. He also took Pietro Menga the distance back in  2013. Caswell will want to put on a show in this one. Expect bodies to fly.

As usual an exceptional array of amateur talent competes on the undercard with some names building a real reputation for themselves on the South Coast showcase.

Shock N’ Awe 19 – Results

South Cost MMA’s flagship show hit the Mountbatten Centre once again this past weekend with an array of titles up for grabs. As usual the mix of pro, amateur and K1 action gave the fans plenty to cheer about.

In the main event Ryan White had unfortunately missed weight the day before removing his chance of the gold, as it transpired it didn’t matter. Unbeaten and perhaps under rated Roman Ship from South Morton MMA managed to defeat the veteran to claim the SnA light heavyweight crown with a TKO stoppage.

Ippon Gym’s Andy Kerr successfully defended his title against Cleverson De Silva. De Silva, fighting out of Andy Roberts BJJ got his shot after opponent changes for Kerr. The challenger took the fight the distance but lost out unanimously to the champion.

Shock N’ Awe favourite and top UK bantamweight James Brum made a successful return to form. He came through against AVT’s Niko Gjoka across the board on the judges scorecards however, Brum missed weight by 0.8lbs so was ineligible to take the title.

There was a quick victory for highly touted GYM01 fighter Ollie Davidson, he dispatched Jaraslow Francuz in less than a minute of the first round.

“G.I” Joe Laurence returned to Shock N’ Awe in the hope of getting back to winning ways, the popular flyweight was forced to tap by Shamsal Haque with seconds left in the fight.

Alec Connelly retained his amateur featherweight title with a split decision over Matt Newan on the undercard.

In the 205lb division there was a new amateur champion crowned as Terry Brazier finished Nathan Philpott with ground and pound. He joins his South Morton team mate Roman Ship as a SnA champion.

Shock N’ Awe 19 – Fight Card – March 7th

Shock N’ Awe returns to Portsmouth’s Mountbatten centre on March 7th. The fight card has been through some changes and what has emerged is another blockbuster put together by Brian Adams and promoter Gareth Johnson.

sna belts

There are amateur and professional titles on the line, 7 in total with the main event being contested for the light heavyweight crown.

UK MMA vet Ryan White returns to defend the title he won last year and faces the undefeated Roman Ship in a clash  between two big men that’s sure to pack a punch.

James Brum returns to Shock N’ Awe after a globetrotting stint with Cage Warriors during which he went 7-1. The former CWFC title contender faces AVT’s Niko Gjoka. Niko had been due to face James Pennington last time around but was forced out with an injury. This is a potential fight of the night between two top tier veterans.

Ippon’s Andy Kerr defends his Welterweight title against Cleverson De Silva, both men have been involved in great bouts at SnA in the past and will both have a huge following in attendance. Jui Jitsu wizard De Silva is taking a big step up in competition against the 6-4 champion.

Elsewhere Joe Laurence makes a bid to salvage his record in what could well be his last fight. Now (7-7), Laurence has had more than his fair share of ups and downs in the sport and will hope to give his loyal fan base something to cheer about. He faces Shamsul Haque (5-6) in a well matched contest at 125lbs.

As usual there is a number of K1 bouts on the card including Molly “Meatball” McCann who makes the switch in rules for the stand up fight for the evening following a great start in MMA.

GYM01’s Ollie Davidson looks to score his first win and show why he is hotly tipped as one for the future despite picking up a loss in his debut.

The Full Fight Card can be found below, stay tuned for interviews and more right here during fight week.

Shock N’ Awe 19 : Amateur welterweight bout added

Shock N’ Awe have added an interesting amateur bout to their March 7th card. Fighting out of Gods of War, 26 year old Kyle Grey takes on unbeaten Alan Brykalski of Mad Dogs MMA.

The two will clash at 170lbs on the undercard, 1-1-0 Grey will be looking to make a name for himself with a move towards the welterweight gold and his opponent will be hoping to extend his perfect record to 2-0.

Brian Adams has eyes on these two as potential challengers in the future. The Shock N’ Awe match maker said

“Kyle Grey comes highly recommended from the coaches at Gods of War, he has his eye on the U170lbs ammy belt and the winner of this fight certainly takes a step towards it”

“Alan Brykalski will, I`m sure also be looking to show the Shock N’ Awe fans what he is about and put a spanner in the works for Kyle, a win on March 7th for him will be a big statement to the other ammy welters from the South.”

Shock N’ Awe announce HUGE Main Event in March

Every once in a while a promoter gets to put on the fight that all the talk will be about. Following on from a card which saw some excellent performances negate the pull outs and injuries the last card suffered, Shock N’ Awe have announced their March 7th Main Event.

( Photo Via AddictedMMA.com courtesy of Ben Boogeyman Farrelly )

A welterweight title showdown which sees Exile Gym‘s Benny ‘Brutal’ Carr make the short trip to Portsmouth with his faithful team and army of fans. He will face the recently crowned champion, Ippon Gym’s Andy Kerr.

The announcement came just 24 hours after last weekend’s show but has been too long coming for many South Coast fans.

Kerr won the belt back in September with a dominant win over Jacek Toczydlowski – A man who handed Benny Carr his only pro loss on BAMMA 15.

After a ‘Fight of the Night’ against Marc Doyle at Shock N’ Awe 17, Carr was invited for a title shot at 155lbs but instead looked to take a break from the fight game. Cornering his team mates on Saturday night may well have rekindled the passion for Carr as he’s signed to take on a potentially more dangerous opponent than he has faced before.

Andy Kerr will look to make his first title defence in what will no doubt be a packed house. The buzz has already spread through social media since the announcement and all being well this fight will top the bill in a little over three months time.

You can follow both men on social media in the build up to this fight.

Shock N’ Awe 18: Weigh In results #SnA18

There were just two fighters missing the target at today’s weigh in. Ryan White missed the light heavyweight limit by 2lbs, with amateur Light heavyweight Sam Spokes also missing his mark by 1lb.

While White’s opponent Shaun Lomas will weigh in on the day as he is a short notice stand in, Spokes has left himself without the chance to take the belt, should he defeat Nathan Philpott on the night.

The main event is all systems go for the featherweight title, James Pennington and Tyler Thomas both easing in under the 145lb bracket.

With a couple of guys including Lightweight challengers Alan Tallis and Rod Phelps to hit the scale tomorrow, here’s how they weighed in this afternoon.

Shock N’ Awe 18 – Night of Champions – November 22nd, Portsmouth

There have been a couple of changes to the card in the last few weeks, the withdrawal of Niko Djoka due to a broken cheek bone means that bantamweight champion James Pennington now takes on Tyler Thomas for the featherweight title.

A tough test and a risky fight for the ‘Power Weasel’ who will give up the size advantage he has over most at 135lbs.

There are five amateur titles up for grabs too, Lewis Willshere from Exile Gym takes on Jay Thomas (3-6-1)  after a his original opponent pulled out. Willshere looked impressive in his last visit to Mountbatten centre with a 3rd round TKO over Joe Osbourne, which earned him a shot at the gold.

Alan Tallis has been unfortunate in the lead up to his title fight, originally set to rematch Arthur Frost, a couple of injuries mean that he will now face late stand in Rod Phelps 2-0 for his chance at the strap.

Shock N’ Awe continue their excellent work with WMMA, Cage Warriors vet Bryony Tyrell of Exile Gym takes on Vectis MMA’s Indy Briar, Indy’s first venture into the cage after competing on the BJJ circuit previously.

Local fan favourite ‘G.I’ Joe Laurence is back on SnA after a year out. He is looking to right a three fight skid which can make the Ippon Gym fighter’s record look a little misleading. Always game and a very exciting fighter, he will take on Danny Castleton, who makes his pro debut. Castleton has featured here before and will be well aware of the roar the capacity crowd brings. A very tough test for him, in was is arguably a must win for Laurence.

Sam Spokes made his debut at Heavyweight last time out in the first 205+ bout in the history of the show. This time he’s limited to 205lbs as the amatuer title is on the line against the more experience Nathan Philpott from Lord MMA.

Ever popular Jade Barker looks to stake a claim in the 135lb MMA division after impressing in K1 on previous shows. Fellow MMA debutant Ffion Davies will be standing across from her. A Judo black belt, Davies will look to utilise those skills to get her first win, though her opponent Barker trains out of GYM01, among the notables there is Commonwealth Judo champ Brett Caswell. Let the bodies hit the floor in this one.

A rematch between Ryan White and Brad Conway hit the skids late on. Conway pulled out with 3 days to go. In at the final hour is Shaun Lomas. Perhaps a tougher test for White who was on his way to dispatching Conway when a controversial DQ gave Brad Conway the win.

As always a packed house will be at the Mountbatten centre to watch this one go down. The full fight card can be found below.

Public weigh ins are at GYM01 Friday 21st November. Fighters will be on the scales from 1pm.

Tickets are available via shockNawe.co.uk and can be collected at the venue. (proof of purchase/ID required)

Exile Gym: A Fight Family #SnA18

In recent years the sport of mixed martial arts has grown vastly, not on the level some promoters (including UFC’s Dana White) would have you believe, but a flick through the yellow pages, or 21st century equivalent, will show you a host of gyms offering to teach you the various disciplines of MMA, in any city.

While many of those Google might throw up fall in to the unfortunate ‘McDojo’ category, there are a number established gyms supplying the domestic scene with the current crop of talent, and even fewer with the potential to produce champions.

Down on Britain’s south coast Southampton’s Exile Gym have built a team, a family, a force that is making UKMMA stand up and take notice. In just two weeks time, the South Coast’s top proving ground for MMA opens it doors to legions of fans once again for Shock N’ Awe 18. Among them will be an army of support for Exile Coach Daniel Bourne’s fight team.

Moulded from Look Borai gym, where Bourne had coached since 2006, Exile as we know it today came about in 2011 as the Head MMA coach explains;

“Master Sanga Look Borai trained the 3 of us, Dean Kendell, Gareth Blair and I, in Muay Thai back in the late 90’s to early 2000’s. When Master Sanga went back to Thailand Dean Kendell took over the gym as Head Coach and I was assistant coach in Muay Thai.

Exile started out in 2011 and was the brain child of Jarrod Speed, who competed in MMA back in 2002 and fought Tengiz-Tedoradze. I had been coaching MMA from 2006 at the Look Borai Gym where Jarrod had trained for his fights. It had been his dream to open up a big MMA gym like the ones we had trained at in America.”

The team at Exile covers a broad range of skills and experience, Bourne himself trained and competed in Sanda/Sanshou back in the mid to late 90s before training in Muay Thai and grappling.

Gareth Blair coaches Muay Thai and MMA. He has also trained Boxing with Cornelius Carr and competed both in Muay Thai and Boxing.

Janis Meiksans coaches Wrestling, competed at a high level in Latvia and trained with Olympians Stefan Vasile Loan and Artem Kotov.

Trevor Birmingham teaches BJJ,a gold medallist in multiple European and World BJJ championships around the world.

Bourne coaches MMA at Exile (Image from Facebook)

Not everybody that walks through the doors is looking to compete. Exile offers expert training in a friendly environment with the option and support to take it as far as an individual wants to.

“We have fighters competing in Muay Thai, MMA, Boxing and BJJ, Probably about 13 guys and girls who have had fights and we have a few more about to take their first step at competing”

“There is no distinction between a fighter and hobbyist at the  gym, everyone is on the same level, everyone looks after each other, nobody is bigger than the gym and the respect that must be shown in it.”

“Gareth, Trev, Jarrod and especially Dean care so much about the people in the gym, they truly are the kindest most caring, fairest, along with toughest coaches anyone could have and I think the students see that. They see that we care about their lives outside of the gym, that family and work come first, the gym is a hobby, and their priorities must be in the right order.”

“Most of the students came to Exile not knowing one another, but they made friends and created close bonds with one another. Students brought their families in to the ‘gym world’ and they are tight. Going to each others’ weddings and going out together, helping each other out etc. As coaches we just sort of watched this happen and it was really beautiful to see”

Shock N’ Awe 18 sees a number of Bourne’s regiment go into battle in an arena where they have tasted  a fair deal of success. SnA favourite Benny Carr has competed in a number of stand up wars at the Mountbatten Centre with team mate Arthur Frost racking up enough wins to earn a title shot, though unfortunately an injury has put that opportunity on ice.

As tension mounts and we approach fight week Daniel is feeling the nerves and excitement along with his fighters, as he describes. “The relationship a coach goes through with a fighter is special, it’s impossible to describe. When they fight, we fight too, we get just as emotional, we want them to perform as well as they want! Training camps are hard and bonds are formed. Coaching sometimes turns in to psychology”

Matchmaker Brian Adams and Shock N’ Awe promoter Gareth Johnson have taken the show from strength to strength as well as their own GYM01. Formerly South Coast Submissions, it was those interclubs that opened the door for Exile to make the short trip to Southampton’s rival port neighbour and compete on Portsmouth’s top stage.

“Brian (Adams) would see the guys we had and would ask if they wanted to go on a big show. I thank them for the opportunities they’ve given to our team”

“Brian helped me back in 2006 or 2007. He contacted us when we were Look Borai Submission Muay Thai asking if I had anybody wanting to do the SCS (south coast submissions) interclubs. Those interclubs were great. As we grew, Brian started putting our guys on SNA shows. I think the first guy on a SNA was Dom Thompson. When SCS became GYM 01 we would jump at the chance to do their Interclubs. Brian (Adams) would see the guys we had and would ask if they wanted to go on a big show. I thank them for the opportunities they’ve given to our team”

Exile have produced a couple of fighters that have competed on the national shows in the past year, including Benny Carr on BAMMA and rising WMMA straw weight Bryony Tyrell.Tyrell lost out to Beckie Aincough at Cage Warriors in Liverpool.  Well nurtured, they have managed to carve out potential paths to the top, not just on talent alone. Bourne says;

“I think that it is rare that talent without nurture can get someone far. It’s great if someone is talented and hard working. Most people have to put in hard work to do well. At Exile some guys have to work harder than others to do well. Dean Kendell is phenomenal at getting the most out of people, physically and mentally, he doesn’t give a crap how talented you are, he just wants people to put in the hours at the gym. You get out what you put in. Benny, Bryony and Frosty, they put in the hours” and they get what they deserve.”

There are three Exile fighters appearing on November 22nd in Portsmouth, Bryony Tyrell, Lewis Wilshere and Dave Chamberlain, with the unfortunate withdrawal of Arthur Frost.

Wilshere impressed last time out with a TKO in the third round after a real back and fourth battle. Chamberlain will look to bounce back from a debut defeat having got the first fight jitters out of the way and Bryony Tyrell faces debutant Indy Briar, in the cage for the first time but having impressed in BJJ over the past year. Their MMA coach is hopeful they can bring home the wins to Southampton.

“Bryony’s got a tough opponent, her previous MMA experience of competing in front of a large audience may give her an advantage.

Lewis is fighting Gavin Haines, who we know nothing about. He may have the advantage as he’s been in there and knows what to expect. I’ll say this about Lewis, he is tougher than old boots and had two really hard fights and got through them!”

“Daz is coming back from a loss – Dazee is still learning the ropes and going against someone who is jumping in like he did! There’s probably not a lot of difference in experience between the two. When Dazee started he wanted to be a fighter, now he wants to be a martial artist who has seen what it takes to get in there and compete. That could be the mental edge he needs over someone who hasn’t fought in front of a large crowd”

It’s clear there is a real family relationship at Exile and that shows in the attitudes of the fighters and coaches. For anyone looking to get involved in a bit of training in any discipline, in the Southampton area Daniel Bourne and co. will happily welcome you down.

“Just come on down to the Gym, we have everything from Krav Maga to Capoeira and Kempo. Along with Muay Thai, Wrestling, BJJ and MMA there are many options available so just give one a go!”

Shock N’ Awe 18 takes place November 22nd at Moutbatten Centre, Portsmouth.
Tickets are available from www.shocknawe.co.uk
